My motivation for spending a scientific life linking ‘hard sciences’ (chemical engineering and data analysis) to ‘soft sciences’ (philosophy and psychology) started in Uganda in 1972. Being educated in engineering in the late 60’ies, meant a period that opened many eyes to meet the realities in other parts of the world. Malnutrition was by then shown through TV and newspapers, and my attention was drawn to pictures and stories about children dying of kwashiorkor – a decease caused by lack of the ‘right’ protein content in their foods (sulphur amino acids). An international group of natural scientists, financed by FN (International Biological programme, IBP) worked together at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda. One result of our work was to produce a protein ‘correct’ biscuit. Well done by the competence we had..........

However, the children would not eat it. They did not like it. Then I got interested in sensory science and more soft social sciences. As an idealistic natural scientist another part of my story belongs to the political world. Idi Amin was chosen as the leader of Uganda, and most of the European citizens were happy with that. After a short period as president, he decided that 'all' non-African persons had to leave Uganda. And so I did.

  • My CV shown below tells what I have been doing afterwords.

When appointed as honoris causa at the University of Copenhagen in 2007 four criteria of my scientific life were pointed out:

  • She has given a significant contribution to establish a new sensory science as a cross-    scientific discipline in Scandinavia
  • She has done a unique work in order to link the academic world to the food  industry  and other industries by building confidence to sensory methods
  • She has worked for understanding sensory science into basic philosophy for bridging natural sciences and the humanistic world
  • She has worked honestly and with power to meet scientific work into the problems in the third world
